This is because Pilates is based on a simple principle:
Each position places different demands on the body and therefore requires a different training programme.

Goalkeeper: burst of speed, shoulders and a safe landing

Of all the positions, the goalkeeper is perhaps the one that demands the greatest range of athletic abilities from a single player.
He needs to be explosive sideways (for diving), strong in the shoulders (for punching the ball away and throwing it)
and able to absorb the impact of falling onto the pitch, repeatedly, over the course of 90 minutes.

In Pilates, goalkeepers’ training focuses on three areas:

Mobility and strength of the shoulder girdle to handle balls in the corner without injuring the shoulder or the rotator cuff

Controlled lateral explosion featuring spring-based exercises on the Reformer that simulate a diving take-off

Impact absorption with eccentric lower-body training for safe and repeated landings

The goalkeeper is the player who “falls” the most during a match. No other sport has a position that absorbs so many impacts from falls in such short periods of time.

Centre-back and Defensive Midfielder: stability in the tackle

Centre-backs and defensive midfielders are constantly involved in physical challenges: tackles, aerial challenges,
blocks and shielding the ball with their backs to the opposition. Their bodies must be as solid as a rock in all these situations,
absorbing the impact of another player without losing their centre of gravity.

Pilates for this position focuses on building an absolutely solid core and on the eccentric strength of the lower limbs.
The idea is that the player should be able to “go into a tackle” and return to a defensive position immediately, without losing their balance or increasing the risk of injury.

Unwavering core strength to maintain position during shoulder splits

Eccentric strengthening of the hamstrings and glutes to improve heading power

Lumbar stability to withstand tackles and ball protection

Midfielder: the most complete player on the pitch

The midfielder is, technically speaking, the player who is physically taxed the most. He runs more than anyone else,
constantly switching between sprinting and recovering, pivots to receive and distribute the ball, and
must also make his physical presence felt in both penalty areas.

The midfielder’s greatest enemy is fatigue, which compromises the quality of their technical skills. When the body is tired,
the knee turns inwards during a change of direction and a sprain occurs. Sprints of 5, 10 and 20 metres at top speed
are the movements that pose the greatest risk to the hamstrings (the back of the thigh).
If this muscle group is not properly prepared, it can tear. And a hamstring tear takes a player off the pitch for weeks or months.

Pilates for strikers has a clear focus: to strengthen the hamstrings through their full range of motion (eccentrically)
and to ensure that the ankle is stable enough to withstand sudden stops before a shot or a dribble.

Eccentric hamstring training to protect against breakages during the sprint

Braking force using ankle and hip movements to come to an abrupt stop before the kick

Hip mobility for wide dribbling movements without the risk of adductor injury

The ideal programme is always tailored to the individual.
